Braces

What are Braces?

Dental braces are orthodontic appliances used to straighten teeth and correct various orthodontic issues, such as crooked teeth, crowded teeth, and gaps between teeth. While braces are commonly associated with children and teenagers, they are also widely used by adults.

How Do Braces Work?

Braces apply a gentle and constant pressure to gradually shift the teeth into their proper positions over time. The specific mechanism varies depending on the type of braces chosen.

Types of Braces:

  1. Metal Braces: Traditional metal braces consist of stainless steel brackets, bands, and wires. The brackets are bonded to the teeth, and the archwire, held in place by elastic ligatures, exerts pressure to move the teeth. Metal braces are visible but can be customized with clear or tooth-colored ligatures for a less noticeable appearance.

  2. Ceramic Braces: Ceramic braces, also known as clear braces, function similarly to metal braces but use tooth-colored or clear brackets, wires, and ligatures. They blend in with the natural color of the teeth, making them less noticeable. However, ceramic braces are more prone to breakage compared to metal braces.

  3. Lingual Braces: Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces but placed on the back surfaces of the teeth. This positioning makes them less visible, appealing to those who prefer a more discreet orthodontic treatment.

  4. Self-Ligating Braces: These braces resemble metal braces but use a self-ligating system, eliminating the need for elastic ligatures. Instead, a built-in mechanism secures the archwire in place.

  5. Clear Aligners: Clear aligners, such as Invisalign® and ClearCorrect®, are an alternative to traditional braces. These custom-made, removable trays gradually move the teeth into alignment. Clear aligners are virtually invisible and can be removed for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene routines.

Suitable Age for Braces

Braces can be beneficial at any age. However, the optimal time for orthodontic treatment is typically between 9 and 14 years old when the jaws and facial bones are still developing. Nonetheless, adults can also achieve successful results with braces, although treatment may take longer.

Duration of Treatment: The duration of braces treatment varies depending on the severity of the orthodontic issues. On average, braces are worn for about two years. Some individuals may complete treatment in less than 12 months, while others may require up to three years.

Benefits of Dental Braces

Dental braces offer several advantages, including:

  1. A straighter, more aesthetically pleasing smile.
  2. Easier teeth cleaning and reduced risk of cavities and gum disease.
  3. Correction of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  4. Restoration of proper functions, such as chewing and speaking.

Common Side Effects of Braces

While wearing braces, individuals may experience temporary discomfort, especially after adjustments. Some common side effects include tenderness, irritation on the inner cheeks, lips, or tongue, jaw pain, and temporary difficulty eating. Over-the-counter pain relievers and dental wax can help manage these side effects.

Oral Care with Braces

Proper oral hygiene is crucial when wearing braces. Regular brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing with specialized tools for braces, cleaning and storing clear aligners (if applicable), and using alcohol-free, antibacterial mouthwash are important for maintaining oral health. It is also essential to avoid hard and sticky foods that can damage braces.

Retention after Braces

Upon completing braces treatment, individuals are typically required to wear a retainer to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Different types of retainers are available, and dentists or orthodontists can recommend the most suitable option.

When to Contact Your Dentist or Orthodontist

It is important to contact your dental healthcare provider if you experience persistent pain, broken wires or brackets, trauma to the mouth or face, bleeding or infection in the gums, or any other concerns related to your braces.

In conclusion, dental braces offer both cosmetic and functional benefits, providing a healthier and more attractive smile. With various types of braces available, individuals of all ages can achieve the desired results through orthodontic treatment.
